When the Sea Lion Splash show is not on the road, they are
ensconced in their daily routine at their complex in Myakka
City, Florida. The spacious grounds have been designed for
the comfort of the animals with multiple pools for the different
daily routines. A portion of the day is dedicated to one-on-one
training with each animal for research, performances and socialization.
Working with their trainers, they will learn commands using
hand signals from the simple "down" and "hold" to the more
complex of "sticking your tongue out" or "flip".

The majority of the animal's day is spent playing, which is a very
important role for their development as an individual as well as
a cohesive unit. They must learn to interact with each other and
playtime is a big part of it. They love to play catch, fetch and
toss Frisbees with their trainers as well as with each other. Their
roles within the family dynamic are established in this manner.

MEDICAL EXAMS
During early spring of every Year, Squalus trainers and their Vet,
Dr. David Murphy, come together to conduct the annual examinations
on the company’s eight sea lions. The exam takes place at
the Squalus facility in Myakka City, Florida. Each sea lion is examined
by the vet, with the help of the animal’s trainer.
Each Exam Consists of:
- First, the vet and the trainers observe the animals without
any hands on contact. The vet and trainers discuss the animals’
age, weight, diet, behavior, and overall physical health.
- The vet then visually checks the sea lion for any abnormalities.
- Blood is drawn first, to reduce the occurrence of leukogram
component.
- Then the Respiratory and blood pressure of the animal is observed.
- An Oral examination for fractured, worn, and missing teeth
is necessary.
- The vet performs an optical exam to look for scratches or abrasions
on each eye.
- A fecal sample is taken and sent for testing.
- Vaccinations are given.
The trainers of Squalus know the importance of the annual examination
of each animal. They have been conditioning each animal to voluntarily
give blood, accept shots, and receive eye drops. The medical care
for each animal is a priority for the trainers. Each animal receive
vitamins daily, B12 weekly, and heart worm preventative monthly.
The health and care of each sea lion is essential to Squalus.
